NAI Burns Scalo Selected as Owner’s Representative for Washington County’s Public Safety Building Development
Pittsburgh, PA – NAI Burns Scalo is honored to announce it has been hired as the Owner’s Representative to oversee the development of Washington County’s new 70,000-square-foot public safety building. Located at the Courthouse Square site, this significant milestone project is funded through a $12.5 million general obligation bond and will modernize public safety services to better meet the county’s evolving needs.
Designed by WTW Architects, an AE Works Company, the facility will consolidate key services, including the Sheriff’s Department, Coroner’s Office, 911 Call Center, medical and mental health resources, and the county’s court system.
County Commissioner Nick Sherman stated, “We are excited to have NAI Burns and Scalo as our trusted partners… Their outstanding reputation, both regionally and nationally, led us to engage their services. Most importantly, their commitment to closely monitoring project costs ensures we are responsible stewards of our taxpayers’ dollars, which is our top priority.”
“We are proud to have been hired by Washington County to partner with them on this very important development,” emphasized Brian Walker, President of NAI Burns Scalo. “This new public safety building is an example of the county’s forward-thinking investment in the community, and our team is committed to ensuring that this project is executed with precision and uses taxpayer dollars responsibly. I’m very proud of our team for being a part of this. We continue to show that we are more than just an owner, and that we are prepared to provide solutions to anybody’s real estate needs.”
Steve Whittingham, Vice President of Development & Construction services at NAI Burns Scalo shared, “Our team is very excited to be working on this for Washington County. The fact that this project will serve a greater purpose in the community makes it that much more rewarding. We’re proud to be leading the way.”
The public safety building will incorporate a diagnostic booking center to provide care for individuals in crisis, addressing issues such as addiction, mental health challenges, and medical conditions. This initiative aims to reduce recidivism, prevent overdoses and suicides, and decrease reliance on incarceration, creating potential cost savings for taxpayers. The design also prioritizes accessibility and staff well-being, with curb-level entry to foster stronger community connections and a focus on creating a healthy work environment to support employee retention.
As Owner’s Representative, NAI Burns Scalo will ensure the project adheres to Washington County’s quality and efficiency standards. Demolition is scheduled to begin in February 2025, following a comprehensive bidding process in December. The county is expected to use reserve funds made available from prior Federal funding for this vital project, and continues to actively pursuing additional grants and appropriations to ensure that there is no financial impact on our taxpayers.
